The Urban Action Innovations Lab (UAL)

By on September 16, 2016

Developed with Makerere University as its anchor institution in the East African region, the Urban Action Innovations Lab (UAL) is a pro-active learning environment focused on understanding urbanisation in sub-Saharan Africa.

With Uganda and East Africa as the launch pad, and connected to the UNI Climate Change Hub, the UAL is envisaged to grow into a regional knowledge hub focused on the various issues in regard to African Urbanism and sustainable urban development. The Urban Action Lab is a learning environment engaging academia, communities, private sector and policy domains to stimulate and facilitate action. The UAL focuses on learning-by-doing aimed at enhancing education on urban planning and research on urban challenges in the East African region, and is envisaged to advance urban ecological planning and development, taking a territorial approach to urban challenges.

The National Slum Dwellers Federation of Uganda (NSDFU) is a key partner as a community-based organisation, offering students and researchers entry to communities. Training and research is planned at graduate level to create a repository of research results accessible to interested people, institutions and communities of practice.

As part of its knowledge exchange platform the UAL recently launched its new website that invites stakeholders to identify solutions to urban problems as well as share research ideas and priorities.
