Youth Urban Innovation Workshop

Description of activity
The Youth Urban Innovation Workshop was launched in May 2016 by Arab Urban Development Institute (AUDI) as a plat form for education for Saudi Smart Cities planning. A general framework agreement for (AUDI) and Dar Al Uloom University and new ways of joint cooperation between the two sides related to the development of youth visions for future urban living in smart cities were discussed.
n progress of implementing KSA Vison 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, this seven months program that will raise awareness, provide capacity building, and bring up the best results of youth innovation through the Saudi Smart Cities Competition.
Sustainable Development Goal 11 targets relating to activity

11.3 By 2030, enhance inclusive and sustainable urbanization and capacity for participatory, integrated and sustainable human settlement planning and management in all countries
11.4 Strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage

11.6 By 2030, reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities, including by paying special attention to air quality and municipal and other waste management
11.7 By 2030, provide universal access to safe, inclusive and accessible, green and public spaces, in particular for women and children, older persons and persons with disabilities

11.b By 2020, substantially increase the number of cities and human settlements adopting and implementing integrated policies and plans towards inclusion, resource efficiency, mitigation and adaptation to climate change, resilience to disasters, and develop and implement, in line with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, holistic disaster risk management at all levels

Changes that took place as a result of this activity
The university will be the main incubator educating students about smart cities and sustainable development. Students are going to study precedents of best sustainable practices in the world and are going to implement these principles in design studios.
How the impact of the activity was measured
Through the product of the design studio projects as sustainable design will be the main theme. Different studios will deal with the issue of sustainability in a different scale according to the level students are working on from a single building to a certain urban area.
