Reality Studio

Description of activity
Reality Studio is a master course run (since 2004) by Chalmers in cooperation with Maseno and JOOUST university in Kisumu Kenya. Students are working together with teachers from different universities. The theme is varying and is linked to ongoing research. Themes are cultural heritage, eco tourism, marketplaces, public space, child culture design, transportation systems. Last year the students worked at an organic farm and actually were building together with the community and the NGO smile. The studio is based on field work around 2 months. During three years also cooperation has taken place with Zanzibar and the planning office as well as ardhi university in Tanzania.
Sustainable Development Goal 11 targets relating to activity
11.1 By 2030, ensure access for all to adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services and upgrade slums

Changes that took place as a result of this activity
Reality Studio is the foundation for research in cooperation with MISTRA Urban Futures in Gothenburg (Chalmers and University of Gothenburg) running research in Kisumu Local Interactive Platform (KLIP). HDK School of Design and Craft, The School of Business Economics and Law, Chalmers, Kisumu and JOOUST are doing research on Eco tourism and Marketplaces. We are building comprehensive environment i.e linking research and education. The research is based in doing research in reality. 3 Swedish researchers and 25 in Kisumu.
How the impact of the activity was measured
Number of students taking part in Reality Studio. Students continue as master thesis students and as PhD students. We have exhibitions and have a cooperation with the City of Kisumu
