Description

The University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1740, has 24,000 students (half undergraduates and half graduate) in its 12 schools, including the School of Design.

Under the Carnegie Classifications, Penn is a very high research university; annual research funding of just under a billion dollars is primarily in the fields of health, engineering and education. Of Penn’s more than 160 research institutes, only nine are university-wide. The Penn Institute for Urban Research is one of the nine.

One co-director of the Penn Institute for Urban Research is a tenured faculty member in the Department of City and Regional Planning, the other is a tenured faculty member in the Department of Real Estate, The Wharton School. Penn IUR focuses on sustainable urban development.

The Global Urban Commons

The Global Urban Commons is a publicly-accessible, global directory of university-based urban research centers.

The Commons, which includes more than 200 urban-research focused organizations from around the world, is a platform to build awareness about the breadth and depth of global urban research. The site is unique in that it reaches across disciplines, supports common research agendas, and fosters opportunities for collaboration between urbanists based at research centers around the world.

While urban scholars and practitioners often wish to collaborate and share knowledge, they all too often lack communications tools to connect. As an Internet-based directory, the Commons aims to fill this gap. It has a searchable database, video-conferencing and blogging capacities, and offers information about its member organizations’ initiatives, news, publications, and education opportunities.

The creation of the Commons was funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, as part of its “Transforming Cities” initiative, which aims to address issues affecting urban areas and promote more equitable cities. If your organization would like to join the Commons, please register here.
