The University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1740, has 24,000 students (half undergraduates and half graduate) in its 12 schools, including the School of Design.

Under the Carnegie Classifications, Penn is a very high research university; annual research funding of just under a billion dollars is primarily in the fields of health, engineering and education. Of Penn’s more than 160 research institutes, only nine are university-wide. The Penn Institute for Urban Research is one of the nine.

One co-director of the Penn Institute for Urban Research is a tenured faculty member in the Department of City and Regional Planning, the other is a tenured faculty member in the Department of Real Estate, The Wharton School. Penn IUR focuses on sustainable urban development.
