The Department of Urban and Regional Planning of the University of Lagos was established in 1997 and currently runs various programmes in Urban and Regional Planning from undergraduate to doctoral levels.

The department was recently adjudged Best Planning School in Nigeria by the Town Planners Registration Council of Nigeria (TOPREC). The department established the Lagos Urban Research Network (LURNet) in 2011.

LURNet is a multi-disciplinary initiative conceived for the promotion of theoretical and applied research in urban planning and development. In line with the broad objectives of the department, LURNet focuses on finding solutions for societal needs in the context of contemporary urban problems with special emphasis on Lagos, Nigeria. The network serves as a real-time incubator for research on the Lagos Urban Area by bringing together experts from a variety of disciplines to study and understand the peculiarities of the evolution of Lagos as a city of global significance. To date research groups focusing on urbanization trends, environmental health, climate change, urban poverty and informal settlements in the Lagos Metropolis are active.
